Inside the Volcano

Þríhnjúkagígur, 210 Garðabær

The dormant Þríhnúkagígur volcano is a unique natural phenomenon. By setting up the necessary gear and equipment, we’ve created a tour that opens the door to a new world.

To be able to experience this wonder, all you need is the willingness to do a moderate 45–50 minute hike (to get to the crater) and the guts to descend 120 meters/400 feet to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift. The hike to the volcano is an integral part of the tour, not only because of the breathtaking scenery, but also because it’s one of only two ways of getting to the base of the volcano. The other option is to use a helicopter.

Hidden Worlds Walking Tours

Strandgata 6, 220 Hafnarfjörður

Hafnarfjördur is renowned for having one of Iceland's largest colonies of elves, dwarves and other spiritual beings, which (translating from the Icelandic) are collectively called "Hidden Folk". The Hidden Worlds tour  takes you to their homesites. It stops at places like Hellisgerdi Park and the base of the cliff, Hamarinn, where it is said the Royal Family of the Hidden Folk lives. Along the way, the guide retells stories about the magical hidden worlds and describes the town's history and its development in harmony with the Hidden Folk.

The Hidden People & Elves of Akureyri’s Botanical Gardens

Lystigarður Akureyrar, 600 Akureyri

Guided walks in English through Huldustígur the Hidden Trail

It takes about 1 hour with the guidance of Bryndis Fjóla who is a seer and horticulturist. The walk takes you slowly through the Botanical Garden in Akureyri and Bryndis Fjóla will talk about the hidden people and elves that dwell in the garden. She will tell you about their roles in existence and the messages they bring both today and in ancient times.

The hidden people and elves have always wanted to live in harmony among us, sharing the earth’s precious ecosystem. Generations of stories passed down through the centuries tell how we are linked together in nature. They save the lives of those lost at sea or in snowstorms, show us how to find hot or cold clean water, and where to place a healthy farm. They have taught us about our valuable natural resources, and now they wish to teach us about balance. Huldustígur trail is a token of my appreciation and gratitude for them.

Price: EUR 45 per person. No more than 15-20 people in a mixed

group. (2023)

Children 12 years old and under enjoy free admission.

Private tours: Minimum of 10 persons/minimum price EUR 450 per

tour. (2023)

The Hidden Trail map of the Botanical Garden will be sold as a souvenir in the garden, at the cafe LYST. The map is useful for those who wish to walk slowly in their own time around the garden and explore the habitats of the hidden people and elves. The Hidden Trail map is a souvenir that will make the visit an adventurous and memorable experience while at the same time acquiring a beautiful Icelandic design in the form of a tablecloth and/or a dish towel that serves as a reminder of a unique experience and the bountiful gifts of Mother Earth.

Iceland Yurt

Leifsstaðabrúnir 15, 601 Akureyri

Experience nature in a unique and comfortable way year round.

For the last six years, we have been living in Iceland with our two young kids in our Mongolian Yurt that we built ourselves. Living close to nature all year round. We want to give other people the opportunity to also have that experience: Listen to the birds singing, the sound of a raven flying by or enjoy hearing the raindrops falling on the tent while you snuggle up next to the woodstove with a good book.

Stay in your own wool isolated heated Mongolian Yurt in the Icelandic countryside close to Akureyri in summer and winter.

Our yurts (or Ger in Mongolian, which translates as home) are spacious. The big yurt is about 30m2 and 6 meters or 18 feet across. We also have smaller ones (for couples or young families) with a diameter of 5 meters. We have yurts available for 2 to 5 people. All yurts have comfortable beds and are equipped with a wood stove so you can get cozy at the fireplace or make tea/coffee or some Icelandic pancakes.

Our yurts are ideally situated at 2.5 miles or 4 km from road nr.1 or just a 6-minute drive from the town of Akureyri.

The camp is a perfect starting point for hikes or cross-country skiing directly from the front door of the yurt. And for exploring the North of Iceland, which has a lot of natural wonders to offer such as the Goðafoss waterfall, one of the prettiest waterfalls in Iceland, only 30 minutes drive away. And Lake Mývatn, a unique area even for Iceland, because there are many different things together: boiling mud pots, rich birdlife, lava formations, and beautiful nature.  And Jarðböðin, the North Icelandic version of the Blue Lagoon, all at about 45 minutes drive. The North of Iceland is a lot less visited than the South and especially during the off-season September-May, you can still get the place to yourself.

There are many activities you can do around Akureyri: whale watching, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking to name a few. There are three geothermal swimming pools close by.

If you want to know more or want to get some secret tips or ideas for walks, trail runs or excursions just ask Erwin, he has been tour guiding in the area since 2012 and is working in winter as a ski –and snowboard instructor at the local ski resort, and likes to go out for a run or bike ride in his spare time. Or book a session outside to enjoy the healing sounds blending in with natural sounds and sensations under the bare sky.

Iceland Yurt also invites you to enjoy wellness treatments. In the Gaia God/dess Temple Gaia hofið which is in a unique hand-carved Mongolian Yurt, Thora Solveig leads ceremonies, meditations and guides conscious breath, and movements/dance. Thora (Solla) gives deep relaxation and sound healing with sacred instruments like Gong and crystal singing bowls. She also offers individual treatments with a special crystal tuning fork and pure essential oils for deep healing, cleansing, and balancing. Please reserve for couples, groups or individuals inside the temple or outside in nature where nature's serene and rejuvenating sounds merge with the healing frequencies and vibrations from the instruments.

We are looking forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to our yurts!

Solla and Erwin

Some words from our guests:

‘Amazing yurt, very cozy and warm. Beautiful view in such a quiet place’
‘This place is truly amazing. The kids will be talking about their stay in the yurt for a long time to come´

´This was such a fun and memorable experience for myself, my husband, and our 2-year old son.´

´We stayed at Iceland Yurt with three of us when travelling around Iceland in August. I have never slept in a yurt before and I am really impressed how clean and comfortable everything was. The yurt is really cozy with a stove in the middle, the beds are great and there are plenty of woollen blankets and pillows. We fell asleep listening to the light drizzle of rain outside and woke up next morning to a beautiful view over Akureyri and with a great breakfast lovingly prepared in a small cooling box. The hosts are so nice and welcoming and I'll gladly stay here again.´

´Amazing experience with Solla- felt like a part inside of me was awaken again and I felt new born after!! I felt like in peace surrounded with relaxing and nourishing healing bowls and  gong sounds, touching the body and soul- and Solla guided me with a respectful and intuitive way through sounds and touch to remember my own being again.

A deep and healing experience - I warmly recommend to receive a healing session with Solla! So grateful to get the first private session with her!´ (in the Gaia Temple).

Husafell Canyon Baths

Húsafell 1, 311 Borgarnes

Led by a knowledgeable local guide in English, this year-round tour begins with a short ride from the Hotel Húsafell to the trailhead in the remote Icelandic Highlands.

On this 2-hour tour we enjoy a relaxed walk among natural wonders not found in many guidebooks, including the spectacular two-tiered waterfall Langifoss. We’ll also learn about Iceland’s renewable energy practices, cross an icy stream of glacial meltwater and see the site to Ok jökull, Iceland’s first glacier claimed by climate change.

The highlight of our excursion is a serene soak in the recently completed Húsafell Canyon Baths, a surreal hot spring paradise that must be seen to be believed. Enjoy half an hour of relaxing, recharging and breathing in the pure Icelandic air before heading back to Hotel Húsafell.

While the tour is not technically demanding, it does require the participant to walk un-aided over uneven terrain as well as down 64 steps to the canyon floor to reach the baths.

When it comes down to choose a travel operator/company or just how to spend your day in Iceland, then there are endless possibilities, allot of good companies and allot of not so good companies that are just in it for the money! So why chose Iceland Activities?

Our company ”Iceland Activities” is my family (my parents, my sister, grandma, girlfriend, brother in law and our closest friends and family). We did not create this company to become rich! Creating tours that are well suitable to all level of fitness from families with young children to super adventures families or individuals.

On our journey from 1983 we have earned a well-spoken reputation as an outdoor family and known for seeking out the sports that were not as common, my father was one of the first ones to modify his jeeps and we are proud to be one of the first mountain bikers of Iceland and the only local MTB guides on the Hengill volcanic area, guides who grew up mountain biking and exploring the area on tracks made by the Icelandic sheep.

Today we offer a good selection of tours, ranging from two hours up to multi-day trips, and overnight camping tours focusing mostly on the off the beaten path experience. We can tailor made everything about the tour and set up the tour as you like, we could keep it more raw or have it quite luxurious and high class but still remote. We could keep the days more active or more easy going. It really depends on your choose, our aim is to enjoy the day with you.

Some people hurry through Iceland ticking off the “to do” list but missing out on the small things and the heart of the matter. In Mýrdalur, one of the most popular destinations in Iceland, it is well worth slowing down and digging into things just a bit deeper. At the same time, to learn more about the nature as well as the life and history of the local people, who live under one of the most powerful volcanoes in Iceland, the infamous Katla; buried under dense layers of ice waiting for the right moment to erupt and inundate the sandy plains with water and icebergs.

My Uncle avoids the crowded spots and connect directly with nature, history and the local culture. It offers exciting and friendly in-depth tours that help you learn about and appreciate some of the less known natural wonders of South Iceland. More information and booking: www.myuncle.is

Citywalk Reykjavík

, 108 Reykjavík

Operating the “Free” walking tour, a unique walking tour in Reykjavík. Rated as the best tour in Iceland in terms of quality and price on TripAdvisor. Additionally we also run a pubcrawl, a tour on finance and receive various private inquiries.

Reykjavík Free Walking Tour
The famous two hour walking tour focuses on the history of Iceland, the evolution of Reykjavík as a town and Icelandic culture in general, laid out in an informative and comic way by english speaking Icelanders and history majors. This tour has no fixed price, instead it runs on the great Free Walking Tour model found allover the world where each participant sets the price of the tour afterwards instead of in advance. As a result, the guide relies solely on your contribution and works hard for his share in the donations. The "Free" classic tour departs multiple times a day all year around.

Small group VIP walking tour.
Similar to the "free" tour but operated in small groups with a fixed price per adult or child. Guaranteeing more personal interaction and time with the guide. This Reykjavík walking tour starts from Hallgrímskirkja and is all downhill, about 2 hrs and 30 minutes long. Slightly longer than the "free" tour.

Private Reykjavik walking tour
Starting from your preferred location and ending where you please. can be for big groups or small families and couples. We can also cater a private tour to include museums, accommodate cruise ships in multiple groups, include food and even a vehicle if preferred.

Pubcrawl
We pick the bars, you show up and spend as little or as much as you like. We've secured deals on the bars and the idea is that the price paid for the pub crawl comes back to you in discounted drinks. No one is forced to drink, and no shots or beverages are included in the price. The 20-30% discounts on the bars are well worth the price. Going to a different bar every hour, visiting a total of three bars before heading to a nightclub where we dance into the night. A wristband is included, which gives you the deals in the bars and a line jump into the club throughout the night!

Money Talks
This tour, covering the modern politics of Iceland and detailed Introduction to the economy of Iceland will give thirsty cultural travellers their money's worth. Learn how Iceland became one of the most expensive countries in the world recently and how our welfare system runs, with it's pro's and cons. Growing immigration, rising housing prices, arrival of global brands and the local's take on the sudden change. Also included are the latest news from Parliament! This tour seeks to keep you updated with the latest headlines from the media in Iceland and all done over a drink as we go from bar to bar. Creating a very relaxed atmosphere with a local friend.

Aðalstræti 54a, 600 Akureyri

Wide Open is all about hiking, nature and exploring new horizons. We are based in Akureyri, and all our tours start from this cosy little arctic town surrounded by mountains with dazzling views over the fjord. We aim to stay off the beaten track and away from the crowds.

During the winter, when the snow is deep and the fjord is white, we put on our snowshoes and enter the frozen landscapes of the north. The snowshoes allow us to go outdoors without sinking to deep in the powder and they give us the necessary grip on patches of icy snow. If you like hiking, you will love snowshoeing.

The Snowshoe Delight is our daily scheduled snowshoe tour. But you can also book us for a private snowshoe hike, and we also have kids snowshoes for a Family Snowshoe Tour."

Iceland Challenge

Holtasel , 109 Reykjavík

Iceland has just welcomed a remarkable addition to its tourism industry. Travel Agency Iceland Challenge, which focuses on challenge tours, has officially opened its doors to those seeking extraordinary travel experiences under the safe conditions of this enchanting Nordic island.

Iceland Challenge Travel Agency offers adrenaline-pumping activities in spectacular and extreme destinations. This kind of travel might be interesting for those who find ordinary bus excursions around Golden Circle boring but still want to feel safe and protected while exploring Iceland.

“We believe that traveling could combine the world-discovery process and self-discovery. We are convinced that Iceland offers fantastic opportunities for this purpose. A country that has turned the course of the world’s history time and again can turn the course of life for those who are ready to carve out room for adventure in their lives”, – commented co-owner Yulia Zhatkina.

As Iceland's popularity as a tourist destination continues to soar, adventurers and thrill-seekers from around the globe are flocking to this Nordic gem in search of unique and unforgettable experiences. Iceland Challenge Travel Agency recognized this growing demand and has meticulously curated a range of challenge tours to cater to the adventurous spirit of its clients.

The agency's team has already created a few Challenge Tours for the upcoming season. For example, the ICE Challenge offers to discover three main Icelandic glaciers in three days. The participants will hike on the glacier, ride snowmobiles, explore an ice cave inside the glacier, and see this frozen beauty from the flying heights. This tour combines thrills, expedition experience, and learning. It is a unique opportunity for people with an adventurous spirit.

Another FOOD and NATURE Challenge is a 9-day culinary and exploring adventure around Iceland that allows you to explore unique flavors of local food as well as the island’s natural wonders. The company's travel experts selected the most famous courses of national Icelandic cuisine, some of which, perhaps, could only be eaten by real Vikings. But some could break hearts and become a favorite food for the rest of their lives. Participants will explore Icelandic extreme cuisine and traditional delicious food in different parts of the country and discover the most spectacular places in Iceland: waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes, and black sand beaches.

The company is also a fully licensed DMC in Iceland and is ready to provide a full range of travel services, including meet & greet, transfers & transportation, hotel accommodation, restaurants, activities, excursions, conferences and themed events, group adventure trips, as well as handmade private tours for groups and individuals.

Iceland Challenge ehf. was created by Ukrainian Yulia Zhatkina and Icelander Eggert Guðmundsson. Its international team includes experienced tour leaders, travel experts, and guides, as well as marketing and sales specialists.

The company does not cooperate with people who support Russian aggression against Ukraine and intends to give part of the profit to support Ukrainians. For more information, visit www.icelandchallenge.is .

We walk through the quiet streets, tell you stories, have a look at lovely gardens and pass by museums. At the end of the walk, we visit a home where you will experience Icelandic culture and hospitality. This walk is 3 km long and with the visit it takes approximately 2-3 hours. We are a local family company that has been running trips in southeast Iceland since 1991.

Our Summer Special is the popular Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour. This adventurous journey starts on a tractor drawn hay cart, traveling 6 km across the black sands flats of the southeast coast. Our destination is the isolated headland and nature reserve, Ingólfshöfði, a home of thousands nesting seabirds, including puffins and the great skuas.

The historical cape is named after the first settler of Iceland Ingólfur Arnarson, who spent his first winter in Iceland at the cape in 874 AD.

For booking and more information, visit www.puffintour.is

We also offer Ingólfshöfði Photo Tour, for serious photographers to photograph puffins in early morning couple of times a week in summer.

Our Winter special is without a doubt, the Ice Cave Tour.

Einar Rúnar Sigurðsson, owner and lead guide of FromCoastToMountains is the pioneer of the ice cave tours in Iceland and has found and named most of the famous ice caves in Vatnajökull glacier.

In the wintertime we organize trips to ice caves ranging from short visit to an easily accessible ice cave or ice tunnel during our Ice Cave Tour, to our two day Ice Cave SleepOver Tour to more remote ice cave.

For booking and more information, visit www.icecaving.is

FromCoastToMountains also organizes various trips in the Vatnajökull region, mostly for individuals and small parties. We offer solutions for people that want to experience the nature and glaciers of southeast Iceland with native mountain guides.

Our Latest Adventure is our newest product, Café Vatnajökull in Fagurhólsmýri, which our family opened in 2017. This former local grocery store was the heart of our community for almost 40 years, but was closed for a decade until we bought it and converted it to be the base of our operations.

Our Café is an adventure in it self. Here you can meet the locals, see and buy our family products, get fresh Icelandic coffee from and try some of Icelandic special treats. Don´t be a stranger and come to visit us and experience a special atmosphere in the beautiful surrounding of Vatnajökull.
