Simbahöllin

Fjarðargata 5, 470 Þingeyri

Coffeehouse, horse rental, bike rental.

Simbahollin is a restored grocery shop, originally built in 1915. Now it houses a cozy coffee house and cultural venue. We serve quality coffee and espresso drinks, homemade cakes and food made with local ingredients, and of course our famous Belgian waffles with rhubarb jam.

HORSE RENTAL:
During summer we offer visitors daily tours through the valleys of the 'Westfjord Alps' near Þingeyri, crossing rivers and heading out towards the black sand beaches along the fjord. Horse riding is an intimate way of experiencing raw Icelandic nature, and getting off the beaten track into the middle of some of the Westfjord´s most breathtaking scenery.

During the summer season we have two standard Sanda River Riding tours at 10:00 and 13:00, and the Valley to Sea tour at 13:30. Please see below for details on the two summer tour options. If possible, kindly book a day in advance.

From September to December our horses live wild in the valley, but the rest of the year we are open for custom tours upon request.

BIKE RENTAL:

Biking can be a wonderful way to explore the Westfjords at your own pace and experience the nature and terrain in Iceland. We offer professional mountain bikes for rent on a full- or half-day basis. Just outside Þingeyri there are a number of routes for riders of all experience levels.

Prices For Bike Rental:
Whole day (10am - 10pm): 10.000 ISK
Half day (after 1pm): 7.500 ISK
Included: bike, helmet, repair kit and a map. Pickup in the coffee house.
If possible, kindly book a day in advance.

Riding Routes:
For experienced riders, the legendary Svalvogar route is a circle around a peninsula leading from Dýrafjorður into the next fjord, Arnarfjorður. One part is carved directly out of the steep rocks, other parts follow the shores so closely that you have to be aware of the changing tides. It's a whole day activity that takes you through breathtaking scenery, impassable by regular cars and best experienced on a mountain bike. Keep in mind that the route can be extremely challenging; the full loop takes riders over rough terrain and over the Kaldbakur mountain pass.

The 49 km can be done in 8 hours (for experienced riders).

For those who are up for a bit of a challenge but don´t want to scale the mountain pass, biking out to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula and back is a great option. The round-trip ride typically takes about 4 hours.

Other more leisurely rides include cycling down to the waterfall at the bottom of the fjord and circling back along the other side. The route is approximately 25km of flat road and takes about 4 hours.

Feel free to ask in the coffeehouse for more information about cycling routes.

Opening hours this summer: 10:00-18:00 every day.

We are also an artist residency in the winter time. For more info isit: www.westfjordsresidency.com

Langhus Horse Farm

Langhús, 570 Fljót

OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND.

Our life is horse tours. It's been our passion, all our life. To go out in the nature and be a team with the horse. To see the beautiful places, and sometimes tough landscape, that molded our beloved Icelandic horse. To have the companionship of other horse lovers, and to just live and breath the fresh air in the nature, and feel the rhythm of life.

We offer guided horse tours with one of us, the local farmers at Langhus farm, or our assistant guides. We have well trained horses, steady and obedient, they are our family and work horses, and some of them have been used for competitions, they are happy, well taken care of, get regular days off, and a long vacation every year, and live a fulfilled life. We take the time to match you with the right horse for you, and to give good instructions about riding so you can enjoy the tour better. We keep this on a personal level, so people can see the Icelandic nature, the background of the horses and what made them what they are (the sometimes harsh and sometimes wonderful nature, the breeding, the people and the culture), get lessons if they want, get to know excellent horses and visit an Icelandic farm on the real countryside.

We have several tour options 1-4 hour long. But we can also do a special tour based on your wishes. We can do private tours for an extra fee. Just feel free to contact us and we make something wonderful together, and more important, have fun. Sometimes people also book more than one day tour. On our website you also find information about what accommodation is in the neighborhood, ideas about what to do when not riding etc.

Our groups are usually small and at the speed and difficulty that fits our guests. But if you have a bigger group, then we can now accommodate groups of 18 beginner riders, and 25 if some in your group are experienced. We also have programs for even bigger groups than that.

Also, it always takes a few minutes extra to prepare you for the tour, and it's not fun for you to be in a hurry. We do a little riding lesson before the tour itself starts, so if you are beginners you learn a bit about how to ride, and experienced riders learn how to ride the Icelandic horse. That is helpful and fun for everybody. So, the whole visit/experience here can easily take 30-90 minutes more than the tour itself. On the other hand, if you are very experienced and on a tight schedule we can do the whole process in a fast way and focus simply on the ride itself.

Animal welfare is also a priority for us, each horse never goes on more than 1 tour per day, and we give them at least 2 days off per week. They also get at least 2 months of vacation every year. They have big grassy pastures to roam on and top quality hay in the winter time. They live a very natural life in big herds.

Eco-consciousness is also a priority on our farm, to minimize trash, pollution and strain on nature.

Our add-on options, the geothermal mineral bath, and the waffle lunch, are also very popular.

Austvaðsholtfarm, the heart of Hekluhestar, is located 12 km from Hella, in a vast open area 100 km. east of Reykjavik in the vicinity of the volcano Mt. Hekla, bordered by the river Rangá and has the character of a family farm.
Horses are the focal point of activity at Hekluhestar, brought up and trained with the requirements of our guests in mind. Perfectly adapted to their ground, from the grassy meadows and river randges to the rugged desertic highlands and volcanic fields. The Icelandic horse has a fourth and fifth gait, tölt and pace, which enable one to cover long distances comfortably and swiftly.

For over thirty years the Hekluhestar family has guided many groups of people coming from all over the world through the rugged area of Hekla. Anita is continuing the family tradition that her parents, Jón and Nicole started, and is leading the riding tours, which she has been involved every year since she was a little child.

The Highland tours - 6 and 8 day rides
In July and August we offer riding tours through lavafields and volcanic ash desert and other impressive scenery close to the famous volcano Hekla. The tours continues to Landmannalaugar a geothermal area with a colourful and breathtaking landscape of mountains, hot springs and lavafields. Daily treks of 4-7 hours. Accomodation is provided at the farm and in well kept mountain huts.

Summer night ride - Ride into the bright Icelandic summer night in June.
Experience a unique admosphere and the energy of the nature by riding into the bright night on an Icelandic horse. Ride in the meadows where the birds with their chicks are running around and the dew decorates the vegetation. Going along
the beautiful and quiet river Ranga with a great view of the volcano Hekla, glaciers and mountains. We start the ride around 23 o'clock and ride for about three to four hours. When we arrive back to the farm, hot chocolate and traditional "bakkelsi" will be served.

Day tours
Come and visit our farm and go for a one hour ride up to a day tour along the river Rangá. Beautiful view of the mountains.

The Guesthouse
Built 1990 in old traditional Icelandic style. Turf on the roof makes the house fit perfectly into the natural surrounding. Sleeping-bag accommodation in a private house with selfcatering, for individuals and small groups up to 18 persons. Whatever your interest: overnight stay, a riding vacation, a sightseeing excursion or longer stay at the farm. You are always welcome.

Fosshestar

Kirkjuból, 400 Ísafjörður

We are located in the beautiful Engidalur Valley, a 5 minutes drive from Isafjordur. The area is characterised by majestic mountains and an abundance of rivers and waterfalls and at the bottom of the valley is Isafjordur's first Hydroelectric Power Station, The Fossavatn Power Plant (Fossavatnsvirkjun). With sheep roaming free throughout the valley, extraordinary birdlife and beautiful scenery, we can guarantee a great experience with us.

Our stables in Engidalur ave been used by numerous riders throughout the years and are a big part of the history of horse riding in Isafjordur. In 2006 Árni and Mimmo bought the stables and started renovating the buildings. Now we have eight 8,2 sq meter stalls for our horses and we plan on adding another four soon. We also have our own riding arena, a dressing room and riding gear storage, a coffeeroom and a small bathroom.

Experience the raw natural beauty of the area while riding an Icelandic horse. We offer short riding tours every day, suitable for both beginners and advanced riders. We take pleasure in introducing people from all over the world to the wonders of the Icelandic horse and the beautiful area of Westfjords. Our tours have been designed so that everyone can join us for a ride they find suitable to their skills.

You are required to wear a helmet while riding with us and we will provide you with one when you arrive. We can also provide you with anything else you might need, such as overalls, boots, gloves, headwear, saddles and bridles. We also give you the option of using GoPro filming and photography, we will document each and individual tour and send you the media within two weeks from your visit. Even if your experience will be unforgettable, it is nice to be able to share it with your folks back home!

We can pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Isafjordur.

Námshestar

Kúludalsá, 301 Akranes

The Icelandic horse, nature and culture
bThe farm Kuludalsa is located in West Iceland, near the small town Akranes and close to road number one. The owner is Ragnheidur Thorgrimsdottir. She is born and brought up on the farm and has a long career as a teacher.

When you leave Reykjavik you drive toward north. It takes about 40 minutes to drive to Kuludalsa. On the way there is a tunnel under Hvalfjörður/ Whalefjord (Hvalfjarðargöng). When you leave the tunnel on the north side, you drive toward east and it takes only 2 - 3 minutes from the tunnel and to the farm, that is on the sea side of the road. (Please dont take the tiny road to "Kuludalsa 2" on the left side of the road).

Private Accommodation

We offer private accommodation at the farm.
Horse - culture

On our farm, we keep a number of nice horses that have been trained for those who have little or no experience in horseback riding. Sometimes we have courses for childreen in horsemanship and riding as we believe that horses are able to turn the attitude toward nature and culture the positive way. Turists that wish to meet those horses and take a short riding tour are very welcome.

Lynghorse

Lynghóll, 551 Sauðárkrókur

Even in my early youth in my home country Germany, I got to know and love the Icelandic horses. In 1996 I moved to Iceland and finished the FT young horse trainer diploma, awarded by the Icelandic Horse Trainers Association. Over the years I have gathered a lot of experience in horse tourism and worked on various farms as a guide and a horse trainer. Since 2004, I have been a part-time adjunct in the tourism department of the Hólar University college, in addition to my job as a horse trainer. In 2007 I completed an MBA degree in Tourism and Leisure Management. In 2010 I began my studies at Hólar University College's department of Equine science from where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in riding and riding instructions in May 2013. (More information about this program is here.)
2013 - June 2014 I worked as a horse trainer at Mette Mannseth´s and Gisli Gislason´s farm Þúfur. Mette is the chef riding teacher in Hólar University College and the first woman to achieve the Master riding teacher and horse trainer degree of Iceland. This is the highest degree in icelandic horsemanship and just 5 other riders have ever achieved it.
Gisli and Mette are also among the best competition and breeding horse riders in Iceland.

Since september 2014 I am parttime teacher at the department of Equine studies of Hólar University College.

Hraunkot, 641 Húsavík

Looking for a ridingtour in Iceland? Take a look at this website and see if we can give you the riding holiday you dream of.

Over 200 years ago, our family settled down on this land of lava and has lived here for generations. In fact, the word "Hraunkot" means "a small house in the lava". Somehow, our forfathers found a way to culture the land and explore the resources while keeping the wild Icelandic nature.

Here on the farm Hraunkot, we can offer you horseback riding and homemade handcrafts, using our own materials.

Our aim is to let you experience Iceland in a natural way, just as generations before us have done.

You will find more information about horseback riding in the top menu.

We hope to see you during the summer!
