Whale Watching

Join Special Tours for an informative and exciting whale watching tour! Our boats are located very close to the city centre in Reykjavík‘s famous Old Harbour. The most commonly spotted whales in Faxaflói Bay are minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, humpback whales and harbour porpoises. An experienced guide will share their extensive knowledge and fun facts about the wildlife we encounter at sea. While searching for the whales, enjoy the beautiful scenery all around you on our way out and back.

Special Tours is proud to offer three types of whale watching tours!

Happy Tours is a small family business that was founded in May of 2009. We have been sailing fishing boats in the rough environment of the North Atlantic Ocean since 1970. Our captain has been on duty more or less for 40 years, but now it involves taking care of guests on our boat.

The main goal of Happy Tours is to provide a fun, curious and educating experience for our guests.

We offer wildlife excursion tours on our special boat Saga, (in Icelandic it means story) our charming old boat Saga is a 40 feet traditional fishing boat. It was built from oak in Iceland in 1970. The boat has now been qualified to serve passengers, and we have all the latest safety-equipment. Safety is our top priority.

We offer tours all year around.” Sea angling tours” and “Puffin tours” from Reykjavik during the summer by boat. “Northern light tours” and “Reykjanes peninsula sightseeing tours” during the winter by bus.

FISHING FOR SILVER BARS OF SALMON

With over one hundred self-sustaining Atlantic salmon rivers in Iceland, each fishing up to 20 rods per day, there is a wealth of fishing opportunities to enjoy in this unique country. However, to first-time anglers, visitors new to the island or salmon junkies who want to escape for just a day or two, finding out where to go, what’s available, how to get there and sourcing tackle hire can be a daunting prospect.
By booking a day trip in the company of a professional angling guide everything will be taken care of so all you have to do is wear the appropriate clothing and be ready on collection. The ability to cast a fly rod (9-12 feet long) will help you to make the most of your time on the water, but it is not necessary. Fly fishing instruction can be provided on the river and your day will be planned to suit individual or group requirements.
Amongst those rivers which may be selected for your fishing, (depending on the latest catches and availablity), are the River Sog, River Korpa, River Laxa, River Brynjudalsa,
River Hvita, River Stora Laxa, River Affall, River Thvera, River Skoga, River Ranga Junction and others.
Your dedicated guide will provide transport, impart friendly advice and help identify likely hotspots. Children aged 10 and over can also actively participate and hopefully
share in the excitement of catching their first salmon.

Whale Watching Hauganes

Hauganes, 621 Dalvík

Whale Watching Hauganes is Iceland's oldest whale watching tour operator, based in the heart of Eyjafjörður fjord from where the whales are usually just a few minutes away. We always see humpback whales in our tours but also minke whales, harbour porpoises and dolphins. With some luck you can see orca whales (killer whales) and blue whales.

It only takes you 25 minutes to drive to Hauganes from Akureyri.

We operate two classic Icelandic oak boats that are both spacious and extremely stable in the still fjord of Eyjafjörður fjord which is well sheltered from the open North Atlantic Ocean. Inluded in our Whale Watching & Sea Angling tours you can enjoy sea angling at the end of the tour where you can take the filleted fish with you to enjoy later on.

All our tours are carbon neutral as we plant one tree for each tour and blend the oil with bio-diesel made locally from frying oils from local restaurants.

Also in Hauganes you will find a lovely restaurant, Baccalá Bar, a campsite, and the extremely popular hot tubs down by the black beach of Sandvík. You will find the unique beer spas just 5 minutes north from us, the only one of their kind in North Europe.

Daily departures at 13:30 (1:30 pm) (if the minimum required is
reached).

Sea angling at the end of the tour. Tour duration: 2,5 - 3 hours. Included: warm overalls (are also flotations suits), fishing rods, coffee and hot chocolate and pastries.

North Sailing Whale Watching

Hafnarstétt 9, 640 Húsavík

The eco-friendly whale watching company

Enjoy the great variety of marine life in the unique environment of Skjálfandaflói bay aboard North Sailing’s meticulously renovated oak boats. Since its founding in 1995, North Sailing has been a pioneer of sustainable tourism, as well as being the first company in Iceland to offer regular whale watching tours. Whale watching is a popular activity for visitors to Iceland, and the company’s operations have grown fast.

The fishing village of Húsavík is now renowned for its spectacular whale watching opportunities, and Skjálfandaflói bay is one of only a handful of places in the world where the blue whale, the largest mammal on earth, is known to visit regularly.

North Sailing’s whale watching tours have given Húsavík the reputation of being Europe’s whale watching capital. One of North Sailing’s most ambitious goals is to empower sustainable tourism, and the company has put a lot of care and skill into renovating and maintaining its fleet of old oak fishing-ships.

First company in the world to offer carbon-free whale watching

On July 12th, 2015, the renovated schooner Opal, with its uniquely designed electrical system, was launched. The launching marked a world-wide first: Offering carbon-free whale watching tours by using only wind and electricity for propulsion.

In 2016, North Sailing started offering carbon-free whale watching tours, called Silent Whale Watching allowing passengers to experience whale watching on a completely different level. A breathtaking aspect of the experience is listening to the whales.

North Sailing has received a number of awards and acknowledgements for its eco-friendly operations and innovative new designs, for example it received the Environmental Recognition of the Icelandic Tourist Board for the second time in 2015, as well as being awarded the silver prize at the coveted World Responsible Tourism Awards for “Best Innovation for Carbon Reduction”.

North Sailing offers a variety of exciting tours, such as whale watching tours in Hjalteyri/Árskógssandur in Eyjafjörður (approx. 15-minute drive from Akureyri), evening tours in Reykjavík onboard the amazing hybrid-electric Ópal, week-long expeditions in Scoresby Sund on the east coast of Greenland, and so much more.

Láki Tours

Nesvegur 5, 350 Grundarfjörður

Láki Tours offers responsible whale watching tours in West Iceland. We also operate puffin tours and sea angling trips from Grundarfjörður in Snæfellsnes.

Whale Watching in Snæfellsnes
West Iceland is a paradise for whale enthusiasts and famous for its unique whale species. Snaefellsnes is the only area in Iceland where orcas are seen on a regularly base. Another unique species around Snaefellsnes are sperm whales. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales in the world and one of the deepest diving whales.  Other species we regularly see on our whale trips are humpback whales, minke whales, pilot whales, dolphins, and sometimes even blue whales. During winter, our 3-hour whale watching tours start from Grundarfjörður. In summer, we operate our whale trips from Ólafsvík. Our tours take place on a comfortable boat and are suitable for the whole family. Seeing the magnificent landscape around the glacier and the famous mount Kirkjufell from sea is an additional highlight.

Puffin tours from Grundarfjörður
A nature reserve on the nearby island Melrakkaey attracts hundreds of puffins and other seabirds. Our one-hour tour on a traditional oak boat offers the maximum potential to see these amazing birds in their nesting environment. It is wonderful to see puffins lined up along the edge of the cliffs like sentries on watch while the other birds wade and warble through the waves around the island with its basalt columns. A slow cruise around the island gives photographers a golden opportunity to capture the variety of birds on the island through their lenses. This amazing trip is not just about birds - the setting for the trip with Mt. Kirkjufell dominating the scenery also lends enchantment to the view.

Sea-angling & birdwatching from Grundarfjörður
On this 2-hours boat tour we head out to the nearby island, Melrakkaey, a nature reserve where many birds nest, such as puffins, shags, cormorants, kittiwakes and more. We sail close to the cliffs to get the best view and to photograph these beautiful ocean birds. Then we move into deeper waters for some sea-angling. Each passenger is given a fishing rod to try to hook a fish or two and for this, all necessary fishing equipment is provided. It is all action and excitement on board as the thrill of the chase is felt with passengers trying to catch a big one.

Drangey Tours

Skagfirðingabraut 6, 550 Sauðárkrókur

Our boat tours to Drangey Island start from Sauðárkrókur marina, surrounded by the stunning landscape of Skagafjordur in North of Iceland.

Drangey island is a birdwatching paradise. The island is a nesting colony for thousands of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, gannets, kittiwakes, fulmar, shearwaters along with ravens and gyrfalcons. The island is a sheer sided palagonite rock aproximately 180m high and provides a wonderful view over the whole fjord.

A trip to Drangey is a unique experience combining  sightseeing, birdwatching, sailing, hiking with personal service and guidance. There is a man made path to the top of the island along the face of the cliffs. While hiking you can get up close to the puffins that frequently sit resting within a few meters of the path. During the hike our tour guides tell the ancient stories of Grettir the strong, a viking that lived on the island in excile and more recent ones of how the islands resources have harvested from past to present. The tour is suitable for both groups and individuals of all ages. The tour duration is approximately 4 hours.

It´s not a problem if someone does not wish to take on the hiking part of the trip to the top of the island.  Those who wish can stay on the boat or go on shore at the small harbor in Drangey, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenes of nature all around.

Over the summer months, June 1st - August 20 st, we offer daily trips to Drangey from Sauðárkrókur at 10:00 am.

In May and September are no scheduled tours but tours can be arranged on request.
