Special Tours

Geirsgata 11, 101 Reykjavík

Special Tours Wildlife Adventures - Whale Watching and Other Sea Tours!

Special Tours was founded in 1996 as an operator for puffin watching tours for tourists, and for scientific trips for school children. The company has since steadily branched out by offering whale watching, sea angling, northern lights by boat, Reykjavík by sea and numerous incentive & group tours.

Whale Watching

Join Special Tours for an informative and exciting whale watching tour! Our boats are located very close to the city center in Reykjavík's famous Old Harbour. The most commonly spotted whales in Faxaflói Bay are minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, humpback whales and harbour porpoises. An experienced guide will share their extensive knowledge and fun facts about the wildlife we encounter at sea. While searching for the whales, enjoy the beautiful scenery all around you on our way out and back.

Special Tours is proud to offer three types of whale watching tours!

CLASSIC Whale Watching (3-3.5 hours) - Hop on board Andrea, one of the largest whale watching boats in Iceland, with plenty of space to view the whales both inside and outside! This tour operates year-round, and we are happy to be able to offer German guiding during the summer season. There is a special educational and interactive focus on board, with whale bones, teeth and baleen plates for passengers to see and touch. A cafe, souvineer shop and restrooms are all on board. Free Wi-Fi and warm overalls are also provided for everyone!

EXPRESS Whale Watching (2-2.5 hours) - Offered from May - September, this express tour goes on a smaller and faster boat. It is perfect for those looking for a bit of adventure, or simply trying to fit in as much as possible during their vacation! In only 20-30 minutes you will have reached the feeding grounds, spending less time waiting. A snack bar and restrooms are on the boat, and free Wi-Fi and warm overalls are provided for everyone!

RIB EXPRESS Whale Watching (2 hours) - The newest addition to the Special Tours fleet, Dagmar, is a 12 meter RIB boat that allows us to get extra close to the whales in a way that is safe for both the animals and our lovely passengers. Available from April 15-October 31st, this exciting expres tour is extra-fast and has built in shock absorbing seats to make it more comfortable. During the summer months we also visit the islands that the puffins nest on during our way out to the feeding grounds. We provide warm overalls, life jackets, gloves and goggles for all passengers!

Please note that these tours are weather dependant and sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. If you are not able to see the whales on your tour you will get a complimentary ticket to try again on the next available day!

Puffin Express (1 hour) - During the summer Special Tours offers a quick 1 hour tour to see the famous puffins! The puffins are in Iceland for their nesting season (around May 1st-August 20th), and have breeding grounds on islands just off the coast of Reykjavík. In only 15 minutes you will be out watching these adorable little birds while getting amazing views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains. Our boats can get you extra close to the islands! We provide binoculars on board and recomend a good camera lens for close-up pictures.

Sea Angling (2.5-3 hours) - Enjoy a real fishing experience and a BBQ on board during this sea angling tour, available from May 1st - September 15th. This tour is great for all ages and levels of experience, as our expert crew is happy to assist anyone who is not familiar with fishing. All necessary fishing equipment and protective clothing is provided. The catch is grilled on board for an exceptionally delicious fresh taste straight from the ocean!

Reykjavík by Sea (1.5 hours) - Learn more about Reykjavík and Icelandic culture on this new, one-of-a-kind sightseeing tour! Your guide will tell you about the history and geology of the Reykjavík area while you interact with the ocean in fun and surprising ways. You can expect to see interesting landmarks and breathtaking landscapes while hearing about the culture and wildlife of Iceland. You can also expect to taste a traditional Icelandic snack at sea. Free wi-fi and warm overalls provided for everyone!

Northern Lights by Boat (2-3 hours) - Watching the northern lights from the ocean is an amazing experience you will not want to miss! Join us in search for the northern lights at sea, escaping the light pollution from the city. There is plenty of space on the outer viewing decks, and warm overalls are provided! There are also heated indoor seating areas, a special northern lights video and refreshments for sale. Your guide will explain the science behind the lights and share facts, stories and myths about the lights from cultures around the world. Please note that this tour is weather dependant and sightings of naturally occurring phenemona cannot be guaranteed. If you are not able to see the lights on your tour you will get a complimentary ticket to try again on the next available day!

Northern Lights by Boat EXTRA - NON-REFUNDABLE

This Northern Lights EXTRA tour is a great choice for people who want a guaranteed adventure, even if the weather does not agree with us! If the Northern Lights tour is confirmed to sail, you will join the regularly scheduled tour. If the Northern Lights tour is not able to sail due to weather or cloud coverage you are automatically placed on another tour that has been set up in partnership with the Whales of Iceland exhibition. Enjoy a tour of the exhibition, a special Northern Lights video and a Q&A session with one of our expert Northern Lights guide and a complimentary drink! You will also receive a ticket to join the Northern Lights by Boat tour on the next available day.

All of our boats are very comfortable and have great viewing areas. Our three largest boats, Andrea, Lilja and Rósin, have free wireless internet on board. Warm overalls are provided for all whale watching and northern lights tours, and protective clothing is provided for all sea angling tours. Andrea has a cafeteria and souvenir ship, three different indoor saloons and six restrooms. The outside view over the ocean is beautiful, with room for all - very family friendly! Our regular express boats have a snack bar, modern and comfortable indoor seating areas, restrooms and great viewing platforms outside. Our RIB express boat is fitted with comfortable shock absorbing seats and all necessary safety gear provided - a fun and exciting tour for all!

Safety is Special Tours' number 1 priority and we follow IceWhale's code of conduct for responsible and sustainable whale watching. Special Tours also has an extensive environmental policy, and we are proud to be a certified gold member of Vakinn - Quality & Environmental Label of the Icelandic Tourist board, and to carry the Blue Flag since 2011. In 2016 Special Tours received the environmental awared of Faxaflóahafnir, Associated Icelandic Ports.

Special Tours is conveniently located in Reykjavík's Old Harbour, only a 5 minute walk from the city center. Pick-up & drop-off services are offered for an additional fee from all hotels and guesthouses (or designated pick-up zones) in the greater Reykjavík area.

From Coast To Mountains

Ingólfshöfðabílastæði, 785 Öræfi

We are a local family company that has been running trips in southeast Iceland since 1991.

Our Summer Special is the popular Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour. This adventurous journey starts on a tractor drawn hay cart, traveling 6 km across the black sands flats of the southeast coast. Our destination is the isolated headland and nature reserve, Ingólfshöfði, a home of thousands nesting seabirds, including puffins and the great skuas.

The historical cape is named after the first settler of Iceland Ingólfur Arnarson, who spent his first winter in Iceland at the cape in 874 AD.

For booking and more information, visit www.puffintour.is

We also offer Ingólfshöfði Photo Tour, for serious photographers to photograph puffins in early morning couple of times a week in summer.

Our Winter special is without a doubt, the Ice Cave Tour.

Einar Rúnar Sigurðsson, owner and lead guide of FromCoastToMountains is the pioneer of the ice cave tours in Iceland and has found and named most of the famous ice caves in Vatnajökull glacier.

In the wintertime we organize trips to ice caves ranging from short visit to an easily accessible ice cave or ice tunnel during our Ice Cave Tour, to our two day Ice Cave SleepOver Tour to more remote ice cave.

For booking and more information, visit www.icecaving.is

FromCoastToMountains also organizes various trips in the Vatnajökull region, mostly for individuals and small parties. We offer solutions for people that want to experience the nature and glaciers of southeast Iceland with native mountain guides.

If you would like to know more about our different private or small group tours, please visit: www.fromcoasttomountains.com/our-tours

Our Latest Adventure is our newest product, Café Vatnajökull in Fagurhólsmýri, which our family opened in 2017. This former local grocery store was the heart of our community for almost 40 years, but was closed for a decade until we bought it and converted it to be the base of our operations.

Our Café is an adventure in it self. Here you can meet the locals, see and buy our family products, get fresh Icelandic coffee from and try some of Icelandic special treats. Don´t be a stranger and come to visit us and experience a special atmosphere in the beautiful surrounding of Vatnajökull.

Our photos speak more than words, check out our photo gallery on our web site, www.fromcoasttomountains.com/gallery

Láki tours

Nesvegur 5, 350 Grundarfjörður

Láki Tours offers responsible whale watching tours in West Iceland. We also operate puffin tours and sea angling trips from Grundarfjörður in Snæfellsnes.

Whale Watching in Snæfellsnes
West Iceland is a paradise for whale enthusiasts and famous for its unique whale species. Snaefellsnes is the only area in Iceland where orcas are seen on a regularly base. Another unique species around Snaefellsnes are sperm whales. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales in the world and one of the deepest diving whales. Other species we regularly see on our whale trips are humpback whales, minke whales, pilot whales, dolphins, and sometimes even blue whales. During winter, our 3-hour whale watching tours start from Grundarfjörður. In summer, we operate our whale trips from Ólafsvík. Our tours take place on a comfortable boat and are suitable for the whole family. Seeing the magnificent landscape around the glacier and the famous mount Kirkjufell from sea is an additional highlight.

Puffin tours from Grundarfjörður
A nature reserve on the nearby island Melrakkaey attracts hundreds of puffins and other seabirds. Our one-hour tour on a traditional oak boat offers the maximum potential to see these amazing birds in their nesting environment. It is wonderful to see puffins lined up along the edge of the cliffs like sentries on watch while the other birds wade and warble through the waves around the island with its basalt columns. A slow cruise around the island gives photographers a golden opportunity to capture the variety of birds on the island through their lenses. This amazing trip is not just about birds - the setting for the trip with Mt. Kirkjufell dominating the scenery also lends enchantment to the view.

Sea-angling & birdwatching from Grundarfjörður
On this 2-hours boat tour we head out to the nearby island, Melrakkaey, a nature reserve where many birds nest, such as puffins, shags, cormorants, kittiwakes and more. We sail close to the cliffs to get the best view and to photograph these beautiful ocean birds. Then we move into deeper waters for some sea-angling. Each passenger is given a fishing rod to try to hook a fish or two and for this, all necessary fishing equipment is provided. It is all action and excitement on board as the thrill of the chase is felt with passengers trying to catch a big one.

Arnanes

Árnanes, 781 Höfn í Hornafirði

Arnanes Country Hotel is a family-run company, established in May 1993 in our own home, located in Nesjahverfi, 1,5 km from Arnanes.
In August 1993 we bought a part of the farm Arnanes (30 ha of land and 2 houses) and early spring 1994 we moved our home to Arnanes.

Our former home then became a guesthouse and still it is a part of our hotel with 5 rooms, a sitting room and living rooms, complimentary coffee and tea,TV and free internet access just like in all of our rooms.

1995 we renowated our house in Arnanes, starting with 4 rooms w. shared facilities on first floor with panoramic view to glaciers and mountains in Vatnajökull National Park.

In May 1996 we started our riding tours from Arnanes , 16 years later we are still going strong. The first 12 years I managed the riding tours myself but for the last 4 years my youngest son (23 years old) has been taking care of it.

In June 1997 we opened our restaurant in Arnanes with seats for 40 people.
At the same time we built 3 bungalows here in Arnanes, each with 2 rooms with bath.

Since then we have not built any new houses but instead we have tried to keep everything in good shape.

From the start we have wanted our guests to get the feeling of a home away from home here in Arnanes. Sence of hospitality and friendliness, wanting to visit us again some time in future.

Gimbur Guesthouse

Reykjarhóll, 570 Fljót

On April 1st 2015 we will open our cozy Guesthouse Gimbur at Reykjarhóll by the north coast of Iceland.

We are Jón and Sjöfn, a couple in our fifties who have had partly residence in this location for the past 30 years. Now we had the opportunity to let our dreams come true and stay here all year round and welcome visitors. Our background is in social sciences and visual arts with great interest in nature and and preserving its diversity.

Guesthouse Gimbur welcomes people who like to explore and experience unspoiled nature in peace and, if wished for, with some challenge.

The surroundings give many opportunities for exploring nature such as birdlife, vegitation, midnight sun and the aurora borealis.

Beautiful nature - perfect hideaway.

Sustainability and hospitality is our motto

Sustainable heating
Reykjarhóll (pronounced "reikiarhodl"), means ,,smoke hill" since ,,smoke" rose from the hill by the farm when settlers came there. What looked like smoke was actually steam from hot water spring on the hill. From this spring we get our local geothermal hot water that heats the house and gives us endless hot water all year round. The drinking water comes from a local fresh water spring nearby.

Sustainable food
We use local food as much as possible. In summer we grow our own vegtables and we pick local wild herbs, seaweed and blueberries. We also bake our own bread.

All disposal is sorted and recycled.

We have emphasis on comfort and friendly atmosphere.

Creating tours that are well suitable to all level of fitness from families with young children to super adventures families or individuals.

On our journey from 1983 we have earned a well-spoken reputation as an outdoor family and known for seeking out the sports that were not as common, my father was one of the first ones to modify his jeeps and we are proud to be one of the first mountain bikers of Iceland and the only local MTB guides on the Hengill volcanic area, guides who grew up mountain biking and exploring the area on tracks made by the Icelandic sheep.

Today we offer a good selection of tours, ranging from two hours up to multi-day trips, and overnight camping tours focusing mostly on the off the beaten path experience. We can tailor made everything about the tour and set up the tour as you like, we could keep it more raw or have it quite luxurious and high class but still remote. We could keep the days more active or more easy going. It really depends on your choose, our aim is to enjoy the day with you.

Some of the things we offer:

Super jeep tours ● Mountain bike tours ● Hike tours ● Lava caving ● Surfing ● Team building ● food tasting ● Snowshoeing ● Sightseeing ● food tasting and culture tours ● zip line ● Skiing ● rock climbing ● camping ● Ice hockey ● Curling
