Snaefellsjokull National Park - Visitor Centre

Malarrif, 360 Hellissandur

The Visitor´s Centre is full of information and facts about life around the Glacier. The theme of the display is the fishermen of the ancient fishing stations in the area and their use of nature as a means of livelihood.

All senses are appealed to as guests are encouraged to taste, smell and try out various parts of the display.  It is possible for visitors of any age to find something fun and interesting to do at the Visitor´s Centre.

The Snæfellsjökull National Park is the first national park in Iceland, the boundaries of which reach out into the sea. Indeed, in many people‘s opinion, it is high time the sea and shore were given their due respect. After all, Icelanders have lived close to the ocean from the time of the Settlement in the 9th century and the Park‘s uniqueness has its roots in the harmony between man and sea.

The park is perfect for exploring the adventurous world of the ocean, coastline and beach, seabirds and other life in and around the sea. Allthough the marine factor is the pride of the Park, it is also a marvel for those interested in geology - and especially volcanology. Conditions for bird watching are good; birdlife is abundant both by the coast and in the lowlands. Snæfellsjökull glacier is also famous for the great powers and energy that many spiritually minded people sense when close to it. It is said to be one of the seven great energy centres of the earth.

Sagnheimar Folk Museum

Safnahúsið við Ráðhúströð, 900 Vestmannaeyjar

Sagnheimar tells the unique story of Vestmannaeyjar. For example:

The Turkish Raid
On July 16th, 1627, three ships arrived at the eastern shores of Heimaey, carrying 300 pirates who disembarked. Over the next three days, they rampaged the island with loud shouts and calls, capturing and ruthlessly killing people. Among the approximately 500 islanders, 242 were taken captive and transported to Algeria, where they were sold at slave markets. The story of this fateful day is captured in a large caricature-style mural of sequential panels.

For the younger generation
At the museum there’s a piratecave where the children can dress up as pirates and embark on a treasure hunt. There is also a so-called touch collection where both children and adults can handle selected objects in the museum.

Mormons
At the museum there is an area dedicated to the history of Mormons on the island. The first Icelandic Mormon missionaries, Þórarinn Hafliðason from Sjólyst in Vestmannaeyjar and Guðmundur Guðmundsson from Ártún in Rangárvellir, conducted their missionary work in Vestmannaeyjar from 1854 to 1914, leading to around 200 islanders converting and heading West in pursuit of a brighter future. Among them, three individuals, Samúel Bjarnason and Margrét Gísladóttir from Kirkjubær along with their friend Helga Jónsdóttir from Landeyjar, became the first Westerners to settle in Spanish Fork, Utah, in 1954.

The Westman islands legion / Captain Kohl and the army
The islanders are the only ones in Iceland to boast of having founded their own battalion. This was initiated by Andreas August von Kohl, also known as Captain Kohl, the commissioner, in 1855.

The most dangerous job in the world?
Fishing and fish processing hold significant importance in the lives of the islanders. The text and images depict the growth of fishing, the daily lives of fishermen, risks and adventures, rescue missions, land-based work, and living in fishing dormitories. Additionally, historical objects are showcased. Visitors can listen to tales shared by locals, reminiscing about incidents like sea accidents, on an antique radio station.

Þjóðhátíð - Music festival
Þjóðhátíð is a festival that was first held in 1874 and has been celebrated every year since the early 1900s. It is an important unifying symbol of the islanders with all their rich traditions and customs. Visitors to the museum can experience the authentic Þjóðhátíð tent of the locals.

Dohop

Nóatún 17, 105 Reykjavík

Hi, we are Dohop!

Are you looking for a reliable way to find the cheapest flights available? So was our founder, Frosti Sigurjonsson, in 2004. He was working in France and struggled finding the right connection flights to minimize the cost of travel to his home in Iceland. Dohop was founded to solve this problem and the first version of our flight search engine was released in 2005. Today Dohop has been chosen the World's Leading Flight Comparison Website a number of times.

Since then, we’ve been working hard to solve Frosti’s problem (and yours) with the goal of creating the most powerful flight search engine in the world. A lofty goal? Sure. But that’s why we were so happy to win "The World's Leading Flight Comparison Website" at the World Travel Awards in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

At heart, Dohop is simply an easy-to-use flight search engine. We search and match routes to find the best way to fly between two places and then we try to search for the best prices for those routes. We also find rental cars and hotel rooms. All our results of course take the price into account and we always display the cheapest results we find.

We're not a big company but we are growing and we have a terrific team. When we’re not at our desks we play the occasional game of foosball, and on Fridays we try to squeeze in a beer or two after work.

As the 18th century progressed, and deck ships began to replace rowing ships, salted cod became Iceland's main export. Until then, wading and crawling had been the basis of foreign trade. With the advent of trawlers, salted cod processing became an important industry, and salted cod has ever since played a very significant role in the economy's performance. Katla Geopark Expeditions

Víkurbraut 28, 870 Vík

Katla Geopark

Katla Geopark includes geological features of global significance. Over 150 volcanic eruptions have been recorded in the area since the 9th century. The eruptions created the landscape and influenced where people settled. Through the centuries, man and nature have affected the region’s history. The area is constantly changing due to the volcanic activity.

The Geopark covers about 9% of Iceland, 9542 km2, and follows the borders of three municipalities, Skaftárhreppur, Mýrdalshreppur and Rangárþing eystra. About 2700 people live within the Geopark. Traditional agriculture has been the main source of employment, especially sheep and dairy farming. Cereal farming has recently increased. The villages of Hvolsvöllur, Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur developed as service centres for farmers. In recent years tourism has become increasingly important to the economy of the area.

Geology

Iceland lies astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where tectonic plates move apart from each other, causing a rift zone.  A mantle plume exists below the country, centred beneath Vatnajökull ice cap. In South Iceland the interaction of the rift zone and the mantle plume results in complex and diverse volcanic activity.

Volcanic activity and its widespread effect on the area’s nature and landscape make Katla Geopark very special. The Geopark is in the most volcanically active area of Iceland, and the volcanic systems at Eyjafjallajökull, Katla, and Grímsvötn are particularly active. The region is characterised by central volcanoes, eruptive craters and fissures, rootless cones, lava fields, table mountains (tuyas), and hyaloclastite ridges which trend SW-NE, like the rift zone.

Ice caps are prominent in the landscape, topping the highest volcanoes. Outlet glaciers and glacial rivers flow from them and glacial landforms, e.g. moraines and ice-dammed lakes, occur in the area. Large floods, usually glacier outbursts associated with subglacial eruptions, have formed outwash plains in the lowlands. The oldest bedrock in the area is about 2.5 million years old, and can be found at the base of Lómagnúpur, an old sea-cliff (671 m). Other interesting features in the Geopark are fossil-bearing xenoliths, and tephra layers which are useful for dating (tephrochronology).

The National Park Center Hellissandur

The National Park Center is fully designed and built based on the BREEAM international certification standard. The BREEAM criteria assume that environmentally friendly building materials are used and that waste is limited during construction and operation, which contributes to the fact that the buildings will be more environmentally friendly and more economical in operation.

Access to the building will be exemplary, and there are good walking and cycling paths leading to and from the National Park Center. Charging stations will be available for both visitors and staff on the National Park.

The staff at the Snæfellsjökull National Park's Center provide information and assistance. The visitor Center and toilets are open all year round.

The Snæfellsjökull National Park is the first national park in Iceland, the boundaries of which reach out into the sea. Indeed, in many people's opinion, it is high time the sea and shore and shore were given their due respect. After all, Icelanders have lived close to the ocean from the time of the Settlement in the 9th century and the Park's uniqueness has its roots in the harmony between man and sea.

The park is perfect for exploring the adventurous world of the ocean, coastline and beach, seabirds and other life in and around the sea. Although the marine factor is the pride of the Park, it is also a marvel for those interested in geology- and especially volcanology. Conditions for bird watching are good; birdlife is abundant both by the coast and in the lowlands.

Snæfellsjökull glacier is also famous for the great powers and energy that many spiritually minded people sense when close to it. It is said to be one of the seven great energy centres of the earth.

Open every day from 10:00-16:00.
