The Icelandic Horse History Centre

The Icelandic Horse History Centre was founded it 2001 at Hólar in Hjaltadalur is located in the old stable at Hólar, built in 1931. The old stable was remodeled in 2010 and The Exhibition of the Icelandic Horse opened.

Exhibitions

The permanent exhibition The Icelandic Horse uses stage sets, films, video clips, and objects to take visitors back in time and explore the historical importance of the horse. Visitors can also see Theódór’s Parlor, dedicated to the memory of Theódór Arnbjörnsson, former horse-breeding consultant. Both exhibitions were created in cooperation with the Skagafjörður Heritage Museum.

On the upper floor is the temporary exhibition Our Horse: Colors, Bloodlines, and History, opened in 2025. It offers insights into the genetics of horse colors, displays objects connected to notable horses and horsemen, and even allows visitors to “go for a ride” using Horses of Iceland virtual reality glasses.
