Vesturdalur Camping Ground - Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður

Vesturdalur Campsite is a small and peaceful campsite located in the beautiful Jökulsárgljúfur area of Vatnajökull National Park. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes and excellent hiking opportunities, it offers a quiet base for exploring the region. The campsite is reserved for tents only and is typically open from mid-June until mid-September, although opening dates may vary depending on weather conditions.

The campsite provides toilets and washing-up facilities, but there are no showers, no hot water and no electricity. Mobile phone coverage can be unreliable. Reservations are not available, and camping fees are collected on site by park rangers.

Vesturdalur is accessed via Road 862, which is paved and generally easy to drive during the summer months. Road 864, the eastern route along Jökulsárgljúfur, is a gravel road that usually opens one to two weeks later and often closes earlier in autumn, depending on conditions.

During the summer, park rangers are available at the campsite to provide information about the national park, hiking trails and the surrounding nature. Just 14 km away, the Gljúfrastofa Visitor Centre in Ásbyrgi offers exhibitions on the geology and natural history of Jökulsárgljúfur, along with visitor information and maps.

Several marked hiking trails begin in the area, making Vesturdalur an excellent starting point for exploring highlights such as Hljóðaklettar and the canyon landscapes of Jökulsárgljúfur.
