Melar Guesthouse
Melar Guesthouse is open all year.
Melar Guesthouse is a family-run guesthouse in Kópasker, a small village on Öxarfjörður north of the Arctic Circle. The house, one of the village's oldest residential buildings, was renovated from scratch; it was originally built in 1930. Accommodation is offered in four rooms with a shared toilet on the third floor, the top floor of the house. The four rooms on the top floor vary in size. On the second floor, where you enter the guesthouse, there is a spacious common area with a fully equipped kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom. The house can accommodate 7-9 people in total (7 adults, 2 children on a sleeping loft) and is ideal for both larger and smaller groups. Extra mattresses and a cot are available.

We have named the rooms after our favourite birds: the Black-tailed Godwit, the Arctic Tern, the Red-throated Loon and the Rock Ptarmigan. All of these birds can be seen in the area around Kópasker during the summer. Next door to Melar guesthouse, there are 2 hot tubs, Bakkaböðin, where guests can soak in them and swim in the sea. From the tubs, you can walk down to a beautiful sandy beach with dense black sand, where you can access the shallow sea for safe sea swimming. The village of Kópasker is about an hour's drive from Húsavík, 37 km from Ásbyrgi canyon and 60 km from Dettifoss.
Kópasker is part of the Arctic Coast Way, which is gaining increasing attention from tourists who prefer to travel and experience the less-travelled paths in the north of Iceland. The area is unique in terms of its diversity of birdlife, and there is a birdwatching house in the village. A short drive from Kópasker allows you to drive to the Arctic Circle, Raufarhöfn with the Arctic Henge and explore the beaches and birdlife in Melrakkasléttun. You can also enjoy the Northern Lights from the guesthouse when conditions allow.
