Chez Monique Bed and Breakfast

Monique has lived and loved Iceland for half a century. She left her native Normandie in France exactly fifty years ago at the age of twenty when she embarked upon what was to be a wonderful adventure and the defining moment of a lifetime.

Monique moved to Reykjavik from Paris in 1970, where she took her first steps in Iceland in the French Embassy’s Residence, working as au pair for the Ambassador. She maintained her position for several years, marking the beginning of what was to be a lifelong connection between France and Iceland.

For thirty-two years she worked at The National Hospital in Reykjavik while also sharing her passion for Iceland with tourists and running her former Bed & Breakfast “Chez Monique” with her late husband.

“Chez Monique” was a favourite amongst French speaking visitors and French newcomers. Indeed, almost every French who has moved to Iceland has lodged or met Monique. She is considered by many the kindest doyenne of the French residents in Iceland. After fifteen years dedicated to hosting tourists from all over the world, Monique has retired.

But her passion for receiving travellers and sharing her love of Iceland remains alive and intact.

Indeed, Monique still rents her apartments in Tjarnargata, one of the best locations in downtown Reykjavik. The name “Chez Monique” endures, it represents everything Monique stands for: incredible warmth and a truly welcoming experience in Reykjavik.
