Reykjavík Park and Zoo

The family and petting zoo in Laugardalur is a real gem in the middle of Reykjavík. There you can find Icelandic farm animals, wild Icelandic mammals as well as representatives from the two groups of animals that are not found in Icelandic nature, reptiles and amphibians. Ever since the opening of the Zoo in 1990, it has been main focus that the park is a good role model in terms of animal protection and animal welfare.

The Family Park was opened in 1993 and since then the Family and Petting Park has been run as a single park. In the Family Park, most people will find something to their liking, but there are all kinds of playground equipment, good snack facilities and barbecues in a sheltered outdoor area, which makes a good summer day even better and a stormy winter day good for spending time outside.

The concepts that formed the basis of the development of the area are to see, to learn, to be and to do and are linked to keywords such as family, adventure, stories, games and environmentally friendly progress. Concept creators and appearance designers of the area looked for an allusion to the cultural history of Icelanders. Therefore, there are various memories in the two gardens related to Norse mythology and the nation's Viking period. These include viking ships, prominent columns and Þinghol, which imitates an old parliment place, as well as names in the area. Educational work was at the beginning the cornerstone of the activity and still is.
